I wrote an essay for one of my past modules on the Illustration Authorial Practice MA called The Comic as ‘Alternative Jurisdiction’: Seeking Recognition and Healing for Child Sexual Abuse Survivors.

In the essay, I focus mainly on 3 examples of practice:

• A Child’s Life and Other Stories – Phoebe Gloeckner

• Becoming Unbecoming – Una

• Our Little Secret – Emily Carrington

In the essay, I discuss how autobiographical comics can become locations for seeking extra-legal justice and healing when it comes to stories of child sexual abuse.

I wanted the design and format of the essay to also reflect the discussed themes, I hope it’s reminiscent of old and scruffy legal documents.
